NSX Mods for 2 Old Poops
Getting ready to take a trip, we discovered
the flaws in Honda's almost-ideal car: no cup holders, and no
place for Stuff.
When you are in your Golden Years,
you can't go anywhere without Stuff. (Don't laugh, your clock
is running too...)
So first, the cupholders -
Aftermarket NSX cupholders hang off
the passenger side of the console, and that is not acceptable,
because they only come in units of one, and because they would
get in the way of the Good Lookin' Old Poops left knee. Not acceptable.
Where to put it? How about nestled
over the parking brake handle? Since my NSX is an automatic, no
worry about dislodging it while rowing through the gears, sounds
like a plan. Material to use? How about 3" PVC?
Glue/epoxy the pieces together and
then rout out a slot to fit over the brake handle. Leave room
for felt padding later. Grind out the drivers side to fit against
the console, and shape the edges to sit flat on the console. Epoxy
and fill.
Not too hard, just tedious cutting/fitting
it a tiny bit at a time with the Rotozip. Makes a terrible mess
in the driveway...
But worth it when it's done. Sits flat
and doesn't wiggle under normal (semi-legal) driving conditions.
The handbrake holds it solidly from tipping to the right, it can
tip to the left a tiny bit under hard cornering, but not much.
Fits snug, lifts off.
Storage Basket
Now we need a place for Stuff. Sweetie
needs a place to keep various medications cool, and the NSX trunk
gets warm, not the best place for a small cool pouch. She didn't
want anything under her legs, because it's not good to sit still
for too long, got to change position occasionally. Not much wasted
space in the NSX interior, but there is a skosh between the upper
seat area...
A trip to Hobby Lobby produced some
plastic mesh ( I think it is used for counted cross stitch?) which
got cut to shape and sewed together. The white piece across the
top is aluminum gutter material, because it is just strong enough,
but will hold a bend easily, it is sewed to the mesh. I removed
the upper rear interior bulkhead lining and modified the driver
side upper attachment a bit to make it easier to snap in and out.
Now I can lift it up easily, slip the basket over the top lip,
squeeze the aluminum to fit snugly, and then snap it back in place.
Rests on the top rear of the console. Covered it in black naugahyde,
here's how it looks:
Now when we go on a trip, we have everything
necessary for a proper drive: book, purse, Jelly Bellys, cool
pouch, cashews...
And the ideal car.
Isn't the Lord generous? I don't deserve
all this. But I appreciate it!
Wheels & tires for sale -
Front wheel, has a small blivit in
the near spoke and a scratch on the opposite spoke that doesn't
show in this pic-
This front rim is pretty much perfect
These are the front tires, Hankook
Ventus 205/50-15, about 2,000 miles on them. They stick very well,
wet or dry
Back rim, a couple blivits and a little
curbing, very shallow, sanding, repaint would be in order
One blivit in the right side spoke,
some curbing, sanding, repaint would be in order
