Feb 25, 2001  The Harlot & The Beast  Rev. 17 & 18

When God created man and woman in the Garden of Eden, He created them for a purpose. That purpose is to have a relationship with Himself and with each other that is pure, and holy, and intimate, all at the same time. As a role model and an example of what He had in mind, He created marriage between men and women. Marriage at it's best is a pretty good example of what our relationship with God ought to be. Sacred, pure, and intimate at all levels of the relationship. Loving. Appreciative.

When we get to chapter 19 next week, we will see how God presents us, His church, to Himself as a bride, a wife that is pure, and perfect, and spotless. God is never frustrated. His will is to have a pure, holy and intimate relationship with His people, and He will have that with all of us.

Satan has a different plan. Satan is a liar and a destroyer, and he is also preparing for himself someone to be intimate with, and his consort is the opposite of what God has in mind. Satan is preparing himself a harlot. And not just any harlot, but a truly remarkable harlot. This lady of the night has been around for thousands of years, but to those who look on her, she seems to have a marvelous allure of youth and beauty. She seems young, fresh and pure, and at the same time, very wise. She is an equal opportunity whore, young or old, rich or poor, crude or cultured, male or female, she seeks to appeal to everyone.
She does not exchange her favors for money, she seeks something much more valuable; your soul. She is in rebellion against God, and if she can seduce you away from a pure, holy and intimate relationship with God, then she is satisfied.

If you have your Bibles with you today, and I hope you do, turn to Revelation 17, and verse 1. " And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters:"
In the Bible, the term "harlot" or "whore" is a term that is used for spiritual unfaithfulness. Just as God uses the idea of a faithful wife or bride to illustrate purity towards Himself, He uses the idea of harlotry or a whore to illustrate those that turn away from His truth and worship lies.

In Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel, God uses the illustration of harlotry to describe Israel's worship of the gods of other nations, and in some places he talks about it in ways that would be embarrassing for me to read in mixed company. But it doesn't embarrass God, He tells it like it is, and for those that act unfaithfully toward Him, He calls it like He sees it. Satan has pushed and promoted false religion, spiritual harlotry for thousands of years. He has always used false religion to seduce people away from God, and during the tribulation, this false religious system comes together into it's final form. It is not really any different than it has always been, it is just a continuation of a false religion that started in the days of the tower of Babel. This morning, we get to take a closer look at it.

In verse one, the phrase; "that sits upon many waters" is explained by verse 15: "The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are people, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues." This simply means that membership in this unfaithful church is spread all over the whole earth.
Verse 2: "With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication." Politicians and kings use this unfaithful church for political gain. People all over the earth acting like fools because of being with her, getting intoxicated with this religion.
Verse 3: "So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns."
This woman, whose identity has not yet been revealed, does not operate alone, she has a companion during the tribulation who cooperates with her. A sort of mutual benefit arrangement.

This beast is the same beast that we saw back in Revelation chapter 13, verse 1, the beast that comes up out of the sea. This beast is both a kingdom, and also a king. This kingdom is the world government power that the antichrist comes out of, and then he is also the ruler of it, and he personifies it in it's ultimate form. The beast with the woman riding on it is a union of government and religion, each benefitting from the other. The woman finds it convenient to ride on the beast, the beast finds it convenient to carry the woman along as it goes. A marriage of convenience between church and state.
A couple years ago, I was at a Bible conference and took a picture of a European coin with a woman riding a beast, let me pass it around.

Verse 4: "And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:"
This is a clue as to the identity of this harlot. This church dresses in garments of scarlet and purple. She is also very wealthy, she possesses vast quantities of gold, pearls and precious stones. This church has great wealth.

Verse 5: "And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH."
The word "Babylon" is found in the Bible 290 times. It represents the false religion that has grown up in the world since the time following the flood of Noah. Keep your place here in Revelation, and turn to Genesis 10, verse 8. "And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.
Gen 10:9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.
Gen 10:10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel,"
In some of the Jewish writings, it is taught that Nimrod was the mightiest rebel against the Lord that ever lived on the earth, mighty in sin. Also, he didn't hunt for rabbits, he hunted for the souls of men. A mighty hunter to destroy men's souls. Which would make him a type of antichrist.

Let's see something about Nimrod's kingdom, go to Genesis 11, verse 1: "And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
Gen 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
Gen 11:3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter."
The word "slime" here means a sort of asphalt based cement.
Gen 11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."

In verse 9, we find that the name of this city is Babel, and in later years, it became known as Babylon. This tower that they wanted to build, it was not to literally reach to heaven, it was a place to worship the gods of the sky; the sun, the moon, and the planets. The part here in verse 4 where it says; "let us make us a name," that literally means to make a banner, a flag or a confederacy, a unity of the people under one common ruler.

Nimrod had a wife named Semiramis, she was said to be remarkably beautiful, and became known as the "Queen of Heaven." She was also the high priestess in Nimrod's idol worship. Nimrod died, and some time later, Semiramis became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She claimed that when Nimrod died, he became the sun god, and that a sunbeam had fallen on her and caused her to miraculously conceive. When her son was born, she claimed that he was the Messiah that God had promised to Eve back in the garden, and she named him Tammuz. After Tammuz was grown, he was out hunting and was killed by a wild boar. Semiramis wept for him for forty days, and then she claimed that he had come to life again, resurrected from the dead, and now he was not only Tammuz her son, but was now also Nimrod his father, her husband, as well.

Do you start to see how Satan is putting his counterfeit together? Copying the things of God? A miracle birth? A death and resurrection? The son becoming on the same level of deity as the father? That is the mystery of Babylon, a religion that is an imitation of the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection, and His elevation to the throne of God.

I want to hand out a chart at this time, I didn't hand it out sooner because I didn't want it to be a distraction, and I didn't want anyone getting ahead of me. (Format changed for the web.)

As we start down through this chart, notice how the religion of the mother and child includes various countries, Egypt, India, Rome. Each country has it's own subtle flavor of how they do it, but the worship of the mother and child is a constant across all the ancient world, and it is all an outgrowth of the Babylonian religion begun by Nimrod and Semiramis.
During the Babylonian captivity of Israel, Jeremiah was ministering to a small remnant of Jews in Egypt, and he had to rebuke them for worshiping Semiramis and Tammuz. Turn to Jeremiah 7:18:

" Seest thou not what they do in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
Jer 7:18 The children gather wood, and the fathers kindle the fire, and the women knead their dough, to make cakes to the queen of heaven, and to pour out drink offerings unto other gods, that they may provoke me to anger."

During the time of Ezekiel, God had the Babylonians come and carry away the nation of Israel for their idolatry, and guess who it was that they were worshiping? Turn to Ezekiel 8:14 "Then he brought me to the door of the gate of the LORD's house which was toward the north; and, behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz."

Now we get to the point where things start to get a little bit sticky. God says that in the last days, the days of the antichrist, this religion of the mother and child will blossom forth in full blown harlotry, and the whole world will follow after it. The logical question at this point is, if such a religion exists today, how would we find it? Is it visible? Can we see it? What would it look like?

Back during the church age characterized by the church of Thyatira in Revelation 2, from around 500 AD until about 1500 AD, if we were to think of church art, church paintings, what would probably be the first image that comes to mind? For me, it would be the Madonna and Child. Wednesday night, I logged onto the internet, typed in "queen of heaven" into my favorite search engine, and got 500 accurate returns, guess where almost every one of them led to? Roman Catholic churches.

This is a book by Malachi Martin, if you don't know about him, he is a former Jesuit, a Vatican insider and intelligence expert, and a prolific author on the Catholic Church. In his book, The Keys Of This Blood, he has this to say about Pope John Paul II: "It is widely known that the main personal emphasis in Karol Wojtyla's life (that's John Paul II) has always been and still is on his relationship with Mary, the mother of Jesus." (pg 492) We also read (pg 514) "Long before he became Pope, ... he consecrated himself as priest, as bishop, and as cardinal to Mary. ...all that has been preparation for the signal role he firmly believes Mary will one day play in bringing into visible existence the geopolitical structure he has made his goal. ...he bases this expectation on a georeligious event in which Mary figures as the instrument of divine providence." I doubt that Pope John Paul is healthy enough that he will be around to see it, but one of his goals is a union of church and state with Mary playing a prominent role.

Fifteen hundred years ago, the church took within it various heathen customs, holy days and rituals, changed their names, changed their meanings, "Christianized" them, and made them religiously acceptable. Bad mistake. The church thought that it could baptize and sanctify unsaved heathens and their practices, and everything would work out OK. What has actually happened, instead of the Church taking in and converting the world, Babylon has taken in and converted the church.

Listen: Roman Catholicism today is not the harlot of Revelation. It has the blasphemous Babylonian mother and child religion within it, as one aspect of itself, but it is not the harlot church, not yet. It does have, and has had, a powerful aspect of that harlot church within it: worshiping Mary.

After
the rapture, after the Christians have gone to be with Jesus in heaven, then all the churches full of unsaved people that are left behind will merge together with the Vatican as their head, and then the harlot will appear full fledged. Over the centuries the Roman Catholic church has very foolishly taken within it various elements of the Babylonian religion, especially the cult of the mother and child. It has facilitated keeping this cult alive and provided a base to launch it from during the tribulation.

This makes a powerful object lesson to us about Christian faith and practice. Let's use the Bible's analogy of a chaste and pure bride as opposed to a harlot. Let's think about a bride that is planning to get married, and meanwhile continually keeps going out for a night on the town. She puts on a low cut blouse, tight fitting jeans, and goes to places she shouldn't go, and meets people she ought to stay away from. She doesn't intend to do anything wrong, and she doesn't intend to be unfaithful. Is she a harlot? No, she's just really stupid.

Any church that fails to heed what the Bible teaches, that stupidly allows within it things that the devil uses and has always used to corrupt the faith and God's truth with, is being stupid. Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, it doesn't matter. Truth is truth and lies are lies. Proverbs 6:27 tells us: "Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?" And this is not so that we can be spiritually arrogant or use truth as an excuse to bash other faiths or be obnoxious, we need to have discernment. Spiritually speaking, don't be going out for a night on the town. Flee temptation. Prove all things. Hold fast that which is good.

Back to Revelation 17:6 "And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration." Or awe and amazement.
For thousands of years, Satan has desired to destroy the followers of God, and frequently it is by the church, and in the name of Christ. In the last days, it gets worse. Satan's harlot church is positively drunken with the blood of believers, and with her ability to destroy them. The harlot is, and always has been, insanely jealous of the true bride of Christ.

Now lets turn our attention from the woman to the beast. Verse 7: "And the angel said unto me, Wherefore didst thou marvel? I will tell thee the mystery of the woman, and of the beast that carrieth her, which hath the seven heads and ten horns.
Rev 17:8 The beast that thou sawest was, and is not; and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit, and go into perdition: and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is.
Rev 17:9 And here is the mind which hath wisdom. The seven heads are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth."
We have said that the beast is both a kingdom and a person. The kingdom was, and then disappeared from history, and then returns to life and power. Some people believe that the Roman empire is the beast of a kingdom, because it disappeared from history for a time, but will resurface in the last days in another form. Also, Rome is called "The City On Seven Hills," so that seems to fit in there, also the Vatican being at Rome, the woman sitting there, seems to fit.

Verse 10: "And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.
Rev 17:11 And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth, and is of the seven, and goeth into perdition.
Rev 17:12 And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.
Rev 17:13 These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast.
Rev 17:14 These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful."
There are a lot of different ways of interpreting these verses, who the kings are, what the kingdoms are, who fits in where, I have even read a very good article that has Hitler as the seventh king. All that is very interesting to sit and jawbone about over coffee and Krispy Kremes, and when it does happen, it will confirm God's Word perfectly, but I'm not sure we need to take up a lot of time and get our selves bogged down with it.

The important thing is that these political powers will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb overcomes them. Jesus wins, and those that are with Him are kept safe, and secure, and pure by staying with Him and close to Him.
Verse 16: "And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.
Rev 17:17 For God hath put in their hearts to fulfil his will, and to agree, and give their kingdom unto the beast, until the words of God shall be fulfilled.
Rev 17:18 And the woman which thou sawest is that great city, which reigneth over the kings of the earth."
When the antichrist is finished using the harlot church for his own purposes, then he causes all the nations under his authority to destroy her. Once again, verse 18 links the harlot church with a specific city, I believe that it is Rome. Interesting that the United States and many other nations have diplomatic relations with the Vatican. A unique religious state within a city. But it fits.

As we move into chapter 18, God starts to deal with another class of people. All of us know people that have no use for organized religion. Their religion is their possessions, their lifestyle, their good times and the pleasures they can have. People that might be interested in religion if they think they can get something out of it, but generally they just aren't interested. So at this point, God opens up His focus, His definition of Babylon gets wider. The idea of Babylon now takes on a broader concept. The harlot church is gone, destroyed by the antichrist, but there are still other aspects of the Babylonian culture and lifestyle around. Wealth, luxury, power, cruelty, pride and arrogance. Kind of a Saddam Hussein mentality. God characterizes it as a city also. Frankly, I'm not sure which city it is. Saddam Hussein is rebuilding the ancient city of Babylon, and was really getting pretty far along back in the late 1980's and early 90's, but the embargo has slowed him down a lot, things haven't made as much progress there lately. Saddam Hussein even thinks of himself as the reincarnation of Nebuchadnezzar. Other scholars are convinced the city is Rome.

The bottom line is, there will come a world political and economic system that comes right out of the mold of the old Babylonian kingdom of Nebuchadnezzar and Belshazzar, it will be just as materialistic, evil and cruel as that kingdom back then, and just as opposed to the things of God. The harlot church has been replaced by worship of the antichrist, and worship of Satan. The world then becomes a mixture of raw materialism and antichristian evil.

Chapter 18 describes God's actions and attitude towards it. Verse 1: "And after these things I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.
Rev 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.
Rev 18:3 For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.
Rev 18:4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come out of her, my people, that ye be not partakers of her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues.
Rev 18:5 For her sins have reached unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities.
Rev 18:6 Reward her even as she rewarded you, and double unto her double according to her works: in the cup which she hath filled fill to her double.
Rev 18:7 How much she hath glorified herself, and lived deliciously, so much torment and sorrow give her: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.
Rev 18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her.
Rev 18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning,
Rev 18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come."

Something that strikes me in this passage, is the similarity to what happened at Sodom and Gomorrah, and how the earth will be full of people that hate to see this evil place gone up in smoke.
Verse 11: "And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:
Rev 18:12 The merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stones, and of pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet, and all thyine wood, and all manner vessels of ivory, and all manner vessels of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble,
Rev 18:13 And cinnamon, and odours, and ointments, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and beasts, and sheep, and horses, and chariots, and slaves, and souls of men."
Notice the contrast between what is bought and sold: for those that can afford it, every sort of delicacy is available. But for those that are poor or unfortunate, they get bought and sold themselves, slaves, and the souls of men. Nobody cares, no compassion, the only thing that matters is wealth, power, and material comfort.

Verse 14: "And the fruits that thy soul lusted after are departed from thee, and all things which were dainty and goodly are departed from thee, and thou shalt find them no more at all.
Rev 18:15 The merchants of these things, which were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and wailing,
Rev 18:16 And saying, Alas, alas that great city, that was clothed in fine linen, and purple, and scarlet, and decked with gold, and precious stones, and pearls!
Rev 18:17 For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off,
Rev 18:18 And cried when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like unto this great city!
Rev 18:19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and wailing, saying, Alas, alas that great city, wherein were made rich all that had ships in the sea by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate.
Rev 18:20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye holy apostles and prophets; for God hath avenged you on her."
Notice the contrast between those that are worldly minded and those that are godly minded. The worldly minded are crying and wailing and saying, "Alas, alas", but the godly are told to rejoice, because God is bringing revenge at this time for those that loved God more than they loved the world. The destruction of the worlds wealth system, and how men react to it, demonstrates what is really important to them, what their values are.

Verse 21: "And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.
Rev 18:22 And the voice of harpers, and musicians, and of pipers, and trumpeters, shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft he be, shall be found any more in thee; and the sound of a millstone shall be heard no more at all in thee;
Rev 18:23 And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.
Rev 18:24 And in her was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth."
Right up until the very end of the tribulation, people are trying to live normally, act like things are all just going to work out anyway, how could people think such a thing?

Verse 23; "By thy sorceries were all nations deceived." As we have mentioned before, the word we translate as sorceries is the Greek word pharmakeia, which means mixing the occult with drugs. No matter how bad things get, Satan will make sure that people will still have enough luxuries and dope, plus his Satanic deceptions to deceive themselves that things are still doing just great.

And that is always what it comes down to, when you get involved with the things of Satan: deception. Lies. Instead of a pure and holy and intimate relationship with God and with other people, Satan wants us to have trash. Trashy garbagy relations with all the other people in our lives, crummy relations with our parents, crummy relations with our kids, crummy relations with our spouse, you name it. Instead of living holy lives, Satan wants us to live lives in the gutter, lives that sink just as low as possible. If he can't get us to cheat on our spouse, then he will get us listening to lies and trash on the radio, watching garbage on TV, hanging around people that speak defiling words in our ears, anything to get us as far from being the pure bride of Jesus as he can get us.

To make sure that we don't walk close to God in an intimate relationship, he will teach us that superficial is good. His goal is to be sure that we spend neither quantity time with God, or quality time with God.
Along with that, he wants us to buy into the things of the world until we get ourselves so dusty and dirty that we feel uncomfortable even coming into the presence of God, maybe we will stay away from His beauty and Holiness and cleansing even that much more.

Lies. Deceptions. Buying into the things of the world. Taking the world's values as our own. Taking the religions of the world and tucking them into our Christian faith, trying to mix the things of God with the things of the devil and thinking that everything is going to turn out all right. It doesn't work that way. It hasn't worked for the last 4,000 years, why would you think it works now?

God wants us to live pure, holy and sanctified in every aspect of our lives. Holiness in our personal lives is never optional, it is basic. It is where God wants us to start from, and then go on from. And God wants us to live intimate lives with Him. He wants us to think about Him, talk to Him, read His Word, keep close to Him, be around Him all day long.

Anything that comes between us and God needs to go. Anything that draws us away from God needs to go. Anything that gets us spiritually dirty and nasty and makes us shy to be around God needs to go. I don't need to stand up here and tell you "Don't do this, don't do that," you already know if there is something in your life that shouldn't be there.

Would you stand with me, bow your heads, and lets pray together:
Father, if there is anything in my life that needs to go, I give you permission to make it nasty and disgusting to me, so that I don't want it any more.
I ask You to make my relationship with You so very important, that you have my permission to get rid of anything that separates us.
I want my intimacy with You to be so important, that if anything comes between us, Lord make me jealous of you, and hateful toward it.
If there is anything in my life that is making me dirty, and makes me embarrassed to be around you, make it hateful to me so that I want it gone.
Lord Jesus, I give you permission to turn my value system around any way you want, until it is pleasing to you. I give you permission to do what ever my life needs to make it pleasing to your self.
I ask it in the beautiful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
